Now we have extreme summer and winter seasons. Consecutive years of no rains in monsoon season has crippled several areas with drought. But inflation, petrol prices and corruption in politics are some of the major issues which have always rocked us before and after the elections. While we aspire to become the superpower of the world; our leaders, celebrities, and politicians never talk vociferously about global warming and climate change. In fact, the deteriorating climatic condition has never been one of the primary agendas of our country.

It has become extremely important for us as citizens of this ‘great’ country to raise our voice against climate change while doing our bit to keep the environment green.

Here are 10 simple things you can do to contribute your bit towards a greener environment.

1. Use Coffee Mug In Office

On an average, an employee consumes 5-6 disposables during office hours to have coffee and water. Having your own mug will help you save more than 1000 disposable glasses in a year.

2. Upgrade to LED Lights

Apart from saving a lot of energy, by installing LED lights you can save more than 50 percent on power bills.

3. Don’t Keep Devices on Standby

We often tend to keep essential devices like air-conditioner, television, personal computer and smartphone chargers plugged to the socket. Despite being not in use, these appliances consume considerable amount of energy on standby mode.

4. Stop Wasting Food

Production of food requires a lot of water and energy; means the food (especially non-veg food) you consume leaves heavy carbon footprints. Donate it to someone needy or to NGOs instead of throwing them in the dustbin.

5. Recycle & Reuse

From plastic bottles to your electronic waste; you can recycle almost anything. You can reuse or re-purpose some of the waste in your homes like bottles and plastic bags. Contact registered eWaste recycler to recycle old gadgets and home appliances. Also, try to buy recycled products to encourage reuse of waste.

6. Carpool Public Transport

Apart from cutting carbon footprints, using shared transport will also give you some respite from the hassle of driving in heavily congested traffic.

7. Use Water Filter

Instead of relying on the bottled water outside, carry your own reusable water bottle from home to save plastic bottle trash.

8. Shower Few Minutes Less

We often tend to take long showers. However, cutting down your shower time for a mere 2 minutes can help in saving thousands of liters of water in a year.

9. Go Paperless

From subscribing to e-papers to getting bills online; there are a hundred ways in which you can avoid printed paper and help reduce cutting of trees.

10. Buy Vegetables from Local Market

Go to the local market for vegetable shopping instead of ordering them online. It will help avoid a lot of unnecessary paper and plastic packaging.
