Menstrual hygiene is of utmost importance to ensure safe and healthy periods. To spread awareness on how women can follow a healthy menstrual routine, World Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated on 28 May every year. Though it is an absolute necessity to maintain high levels of menstrual hygiene all through the year, it becomes even more vital during summers, as sweat and heat can lead to more rashes and other skin irritation issues.

Here are some tips you can follow to ensure a comfortable menstrual cycle during summers,

Sanitary Napkins

#1 If you use sanitary pads to soak blood during your periods, make sure you change them every four hours. Follow the drill especially on the first two days of your cycle, when the blood flow is heavier.

#2 With the sun shining at its ruthless best and your body undergoing the monthly routine, you should be especially careful with your diet. Stay hydrated. Prefer mineral waters with high magnesium levels, fruit juices, or fruits and vegetables that have high water content.

#3 If you’re working, or are outdoors, make sure you have access to clean washrooms. It should be close to from where you are, so you can easily access it without worrying incessantly about having a leak.

Periods#4 Use cotton or biodegradable sanitary napkins during your periods. They are good for your skin and reduce skin irritation or rashes.

#5 If you are looking for a healthy nutritious food option during your periods, try chia seeds. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds in about half a liter of cold water. This will hydrate you, nourish you with fiber and proteins that are great for your stomach, and will keep you feeling full, which is a good thing, as you won’t go on those impulsive ice-cream binges.

#6 This may make you frown, but head to the gym and indulge in some light exercise as physical activity helps in easing cramps and easing out a cranky mood. Working out makes you feel better, too, so it won’t hurt at all.

Exercise#7 Try switching to menstrual cups. They are environment-friendly, cost-efficient, and are silicone based, so are good for your skin.

#8 Periods can alone make you cranky. Add heat on to that unpleasantness, and you’re bound to explode. Try and indulge in things that make you happy. Read a book, listen to your happy groove, or hang out with friends to tame your bad mood.

#9 Keep your menstrual supply handy. Sometimes the red beast knocks on your door at the most unexpected times. Make sure you have a sanitary napkin, a menstrual cup or a tampon on you at all times, so that you don’t have to scramble needlessly when you do get your period.

Period #10 Make sure your vaginal area remains clean. It’s important to ensure that, always for the sake of your body hygiene, but this is equally important when you are menstruating. Use warm water and diluted soap to clean up your vagina.
