Cloning of credit and debit cards to do false transaction and siphon off money can be done very easily through a card reader. All you need to do is just swipe the card on the card reader and it stores all the data present on the magnetic strip of the card. Car readers are easily available in the market and that too at very cheap prices.

An employee of Farzi Café in Connaught Place (CP), New Delhi has been booked by the Delhi Police for allegedly cloning debit and credit cards of the customer and misusing them to siphon money to the tune of ₹6,03,500.

An FIR has been registered against the employee at CP police station on Tuesday by HDFC bank. “We suspect this to be a case of card cloning because of the way in which the transactions were made. The customers had their cards with them, which meant someone had cloned them,” an officer was quoted in a report published in The Hindu.

HDFC bank went suspicious after it received a lot of complains from the customers citing false transactions in the month of April. “A few of our customers disputed certain ATM cash withdrawals carried out using their cards aggregating to ₹6,03,500. The customers told the bank that the disputed transactions were neither carried out nor authorised by them,” a senior HDFC bank manager stated in the complain.

After the bank approached Delhi Police on 29 April 2017, police found Farzi Cafe as a common link in bank details of all the 13 complainants.

“All transactions by the customers made in April and previous months were examined and we discovered that all of them had, at some point, visited Farzi Café,” said the officer.

The police further investigated to find out that accused Mohd. Badrul Islam Barduiya had attended to all the 13 customers after closely monitoring the CCTV footage. However, the accused person is absconding a month before the complaint was made.
