From July onwards, your mobile phone number will have 13 digits

It would also come as a shocker for people who have already linked their existing mobile numbers with Aadhar Card as they will have to do it again.

Government is planning to port your existing mobile number to a unique 13-digit mobile number from July 1, 2018. As per news reports, Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a directive to all telecom operators to start issuing 13-digit mobile numbers to customers from October 1, 2018. The last date to complete the process would be December 31, 2018.

The motive behind changing the existing mobile numbers to 13-digits M2M (machine to machine) numbering plan is to provide better security features to the customers. M2M SIM enables the device, sensors and other things to communicate with each other and other internet-enabled devices and systems.

After the implementation, India will become the country with the longest mobile number followed by China which provides 11 digits as mobile phone numbers. The major concern here is that it would become really difficult for users to remember their numbers. Apart from that, there are several establishments including banks which have online systems in place to capture only 10 digits as a mobile number.

It would also come as a shocker for people who have already linked their existing mobile numbers with Aadhar Card as they will have to do it again.
